What the Library Means To Larry & Judy Hatteberg

For Larry and Judy Hatteberg, libraries have always been a cornerstone of their lives.

For Larry and Judy Hatteberg, libraries have always been a cornerstone of their lives.

Larry traces his lifelong curiosity and successful career in journalism back to his early years as a voracious reader. By fifth grade, he had read more books than any of his classmates—a passion nurtured by frequent visits to the library. That early love of reading helped shape his path as a longtime and celebrated news anchor in Wichita.

Judy also found inspiration from her experience growing up in the peace and calm of the library, which led her to pursue a career in education, where she spent more than 40 years doing what she loved—reading books to children.

The library has been a place of connection for the Hattebergs. It’s where quietness and innumerable resources create a margin to think and ponder, free from distractions (unless you count all the other books!). The Hattebergs regularly use the library for personal development, learning new things, and getting to know others through book clubs, educational resources, and service opportunities.

“Libraries are pockets of sanity,” said Larry. “It takes a forward-thinking city to maintain their library so we can be reminded of where we came from but also, maybe more importantly, determine where we want to go. Funding for the library is especially important in this day and age. Public funding may not always be available, so the Wichita Library Foundation plays a crucial role in securing private support to sustain and grow this vital part of our community.”

To the Hattebergs, the library is a safe place for everyone in the community to feel welcome, as it serves the diverse needs of patrons in every stage of life. Through access to knowledge, technology, and community programs, the Wichita Public Library changes lives. That’s why the Hattebergs continue lending their voices to advocate for the Wichita Public Library.
