Library Foundation Launches Capital Campaign For Branch Libraries

The Wichita Library Foundation announced the public phase of its capital campaign to invest in neighborhood branch libraries.

The Wichita Public Library Foundation is excited to announce the public phase of its capital campaign, to raise $2 million as part of a $12.8 million City of Wichita investment in neighborhood branch libraries. $1 million has been raised to date.

Alford, Angelou, Rockwell, and Westlink library branches are to be renovated, including new technology and, in some cases, are being expanded. The Foundation’s “Neighborhood Library Campaign” enables the Library to increase its programs, provide enhanced access, and ensure the continued availability of vital resources for all members of the community.

“We are thrilled to take this step forward with our public campaign,” said Kourtney Carson, President/CEO of Wichita Public Library Foundation. “Wichita Public Library is an essential part of our community, and this campaign will help us enhance our facilities and continue to provide innovative programs that will have a lasting impact for generations to come.”

“We like Albert Einstein’s quote ‘The only thing that you absolutely need to know is the location of the library.’ said Kevin McWhorter, Foundation Chair. “It communicates rather poignantly the importance of libraries. As the charitable arm of the Library System, we are committed to its strategic vision of having the branch libraries and the Advanced Learning Library serve as hubs of lifelong learning, and a connection for
friends, families, and neighbors.”

“As the needs of the community evolve, so too must the resources the library offers,” said Don Barry, Campaign Committee Chair. “We are grateful to all those who have helped us reach the $1 million mark and those who will help us reach our goal of $2 million. This is an opportunity for us to leverage the potential and impact that will come from the City’s investment into the Library system.

According to Jaime Nix, Director of Libraries, the branch remodels include renovating and expanding the study and meeting rooms, outdoor spaces for the Angelou and Westlink branches, an automated materials handler for book returns at Westlink, and a drive-through for the Rockwell branch among many other improvements. “These four branch remodels represent an exciting conclusion to a facilities plan that helps Wichita’s library achieve its mission to help our community connect, discover, learn, and thrive.”
