What the Library Means To Judy Weatherall

When Judy Weatherall moved to Wichita in the 1960s, the first thing she did was to explore the Wichita Public Library.

Because she cherished her childhood trips to the library, she was eager to get to know the space and all it offered—guided by a firm belief that literacy is key to human growth.

Although her visits to the library were less frequent during her busy working years, having children of her own brought her back—eager to share her love of books and learning with them. Over the years and through numerous renovations, the children’s areas at the different branches throughout Wichita have become social centers welcoming children of all ages with age-appropriate expectations and activities.

“I love to see so many parents bringing their children and such diverse families when I go to the library,” Judy said. “The library is such a family-friendly place. I’m so proud of our library, and I want people to realize how wonderful it is.”

In retirement, Judy has made it a priority to discover the many new and updated features offered by the Wichita Public Library. When her neighborhood branch closed, she took it as a chance to learn about the unique resources available at the downtown location. Whether getting help with technology, using the interlibrary loan service, or meeting up with her weekly book club, Judy is always delighted to see the library bustling with people during her visits.

“When I go to the library after Rotary or if I get there early for an appointment I made for some technical help, I sit in this beautiful, comfortable chair overlooking the river and the scenery from a vantage point you can’t see from anywhere else while I explore the magazines and newspapers available for everyone to read for free,” Judy said.

Judy recognizes the library as a vital part of the Wichita community, providing resources, opportunities, and support to people across the city. Private funds raised by the Wichita Library Foundation are crucial in enhancing the library’s services and ensuring its continued growth. Deeply influenced by the positive impact the library has had on her own life, she remains deeply committed to helping ensure the library continues to grow and thrive for generations to come.
